There are plenty of manufacturers out there right now claiming to make affordable gaming laptops, but the truth is that many of these laptops aren’t actually all that suitable for high-level gaming, such as what you’d get with a desktop unit. Alienware is known for their high-end gaming laptops, but what about the cheaper ones?

Well, this is Alienware after all. They are one of the most recognized names in gaming computers, so it’s not in their best interest to dilute their product line. They actually have quite a few gaming laptops out now that are on the more affordable end of things, and the AW17R3-16755LV is one of them.

Alienware inside technology

Fortunately, the AW17R3-16755LV comes through in terms of gameplay and performance, offering just enough core hardware power to to support all of the same games you’d play on a laptop two or three times the price of this one. It definitely provides gamers with an economical way to game on the go, or add to their current setup.

Notable Features

The AW17R3-16755LV doesn’t contain the raw power and hi-tech features that many of its more expensive cousins posses, but there are still more than a few core feature that every gamer will appreciate and enjoy during use.

  • Advanced Cooling Technology - The AW17R3-16755LV is made with copper thermal modules inside that constantly work to pipe heat out while you are gaming. The laptop’s system also works to clock and monitor internal temperatures, making adjustments when necessary to ensure a proper temperature regardless of what you have going on.
  • 17.3” Screen - Gaming is always better on a bigger screen, and the AW17R3-16755LV definitely makes sure you get one. The 17.3” design is massive in terms of laptops, and it includes tighter hinges that don’t flex, while providing added stability as well.
  • Thin Size - Many gaming laptops tend to be on the thicker end of things, making them bulky and hard to carry around -- and a bit obnoxious too. At a little over one inch thick, the AW17R3-16755LV is small enough to fit in a standard bag, and allows it to be used for office and school tasks as well, without announcing to the world that you have have some giant gaming laptop on hand.

EVery good gaming laptop starts with a quality processor, and that’s precisely what the AW17R3-16755LV comes with. The Intel Core i7 2.6GHz processor is more than sufficient to provide enough power to run intensieve processes and tasks with relative ease, whether it’s actual games, or other forms of media.

8GB of RAM isn’t the same amount you’ll find in more expensive gaming laptops, but again, that’s enough to get the job done here. It’s also enough available memory to keep a few extra small programs running during a game, or perhaps a browser window.

Alienware Specificaitons

The graphics quality is superb, thanks to the usual NVIDIA GPU that most every gaming laptop taps for their graphics power. The AW17R3-16755LV comes with a GeForce GTX 970M card that provides high frame rates, rich color, and fluid graphics for both gameplay and video. No lagging or jerky frame rates here.

We’ve already gone over the display size a little, but it’s worth mentioning again. The hallmark of a good gaming laptop is a 17.3” screen, and that’s exactly what the AW17R3-16755LV has, right down to the usual 1920 x 1080 HD resolution. Everything looks great.

Audio quality isn’t a priority for the AW17R3-16755LV, but it’s still very serviceable. The internal processing and codecs offer rich sound when using headphones, while also eliminating much of the background noise for added clarity. The internal speakers are definitely tolerable. I’ve heard much worse for this price range.

One of the biggest ways Alienware was able to cut down on the price of the AW17R3-16755LV was to give it one storage drive, which is also an HDD. You still get the standard 1TB however, so all is not lost. You can easily upgrade to an SSD if you’d like, without spending too much money. Others might not even care.

Alienware SSD and RAM

In terms of ports, the AW17R3-16755LV has all the standard connections you could need, including USB and USB 3.0, HDMI, Ethernet, and an SD card reader. Bluetooth is supported as well, and you also get the ultra-fast 802.11ac wireless support.

Battery life is officially listed at 3 hours, but that’s really if you’re playing a game when not plugged into a power source. I was able to make the battery last up to around 6-7 hours when doing basic web surfing, music, and a few videos here and there. Add that to a smaller size for a gaming laptop, and you have some added versatility.

User Reviews

Many of the user reviews I’ve skimmed over show most buyers a little surprised as to how much they get out of the AW17R3-16755LV, even when not using it for gaming, There were plenty of buyers who suggested it as a daily use laptop that can double as a gaming laptop as well, and I’d say that’s a fair way to look at it.

Buying Advice

As with any gaming laptop, you’re going to want to save some money to get a good gaming headset to use with it, and probably a good gaming mouse as well. You can find all of these easily on Amazon, which also offer different damage protection plans for the AW17R3-16755LV. They are relatively cheap, and well worth it.

Alienware 17

I’m already a big fan of Alienware laptops, so I was excited to test one out that’s significantly cheaper than other models out there. The AW17R3-16755LV has all the power and graphic processing ability needed for a good gaming experience on the go.

The lower price leave you with enough money to get the added hardware devices you’ll need, and the design and weight of the AW17R3-16755LV also makes it great as a daily use laptop for work and school. That’s all you can ask for when spending less than $1,300. I highly recommend this laptop.
