ASUS F555LA-AB31 Review

Asus F555

Looking for a mid-range laptop can sometimes be a sort of treacherous endeavor, , the overall quality of the laptop can fluctuate greatly. If you choose the wrong one based off of some some flashy features, you may very well end up with a slow, inferior laptop that is outdated a year after you’ve bought it.

If you’re trying to keep things under $500, the key is to look for laptops that rely more on the internal hardware capability, rather than any unique features. There is nothing wrong with having these features, but the focus is on the system.

ASUS primarily focuses on mid-range, affordable laptops that offer a little bit of everything, with the primary focus on performance. The F555LA-AB31 is a great example of an all around laptop that is great for a wide range of uses, while still keeping some extra money in your pocket.

Notable Features

ASUS has quietly been making a name for themselves with quality laptops that don’t climb to high on the price scale. The F555LA-AB31 may be more affordable, but there are still some great features in it worth going over.

  • IceCool Technology - You’ve probably seen intricate cooling systems inside gaming laptops, but what about for the actual portion of the laptop where your hands go? ASUS Includes IceCool Technology inside the laptop that makes the area where your palms rest cooler. If you’ve ever had a laptop run hot while your hands are sitting on it, you know how much of a relief this is.
  • Intuitive TouchPad Navigation - The F555LA-AB31’s touchpad has a wide range of support for numerous gestures and finger movements you can use to better navigate your computer with one hand. The movements are easy to figure out, and are very natural as well.
  • ASUS SonicMaster - The SonicMaster system is ASUS’ way of improving laptop sound quality across the board. It includes a combination of codecs, optimized signal processing, and quality speakers that have a higher range at a louder volume. There is also noise filtering for a crisp sound that comes through clear even when not using headphones.

Alright, now for the really important stuff. The F555LA-AB31’s processor is an Intel Core i3, which comes with a very capable 2.1GHz. For this price range, staying above 2.0GHz is a very good thing. This is enough power to support most of your programs without any issues.

Available memory isn’t the greatest, as you get 4GB RAM with the F555LA-AB31. Fortunately, the processor helps to offset the lower RAM amount in a noticeable way, so you shouldn't need to worry all that much about things starting to lag when leaving a few extra tabs or applications open.

Intel Iris Pro Graphics Card

Although the F555LA-AB31 doesn’t offer the standard NVIDIA graphics that many other laptops now have, the Intel Graphics GPU still does an admirable job, and playback was smooth and fluid whether watching a movie, a streaming video, or playing a few games.

The screen size is a perfect 15.6 inches, which happens to be my favorite size. Not too big, not too small. You get the full 1920 x 1080 resolution as well, which is also in HD. Everything looks pretty good on it, and it’s bright enough for use in rooms with more lighting.

The ASUS SonicMaster sound setup makes a big difference in terms of sound quality when compared with other laptops in its class. It’s a potent combination of sound hardware and all the right processing. You can turn this one up pretty loud and get a clear tone with solid bass.

The F555LA-AB31 includes 500Gb of RAM on a 5600 RPM HDD, so you have plenty of space to store all of your files, including music and videos. The drive performance is average, but at least it’s ot on the lower end of the storage spectrum.

The DVD/RW drive is handy for those who still enjoy DVDs on their computer or need to burn a CD. You also get the standard two USB ports, and an additional two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, and VGA. Internet speeds are high thanks to 802.11ac wireless support -- a must for any modern laptop.

ASUS F555LA Specs

Battery life clocks in at around 4 hours, which isn’t as high as some of the more expensive laptops, but still a decent enough amount of time to work mobily without having to worry about recharging all too often.

Windows 10 comes pre installed, so you’ll be current from the start. The F555LA-AB31 isn’t an ultrabook by any means, but it’s still on the smaller end, weighing around 5 lbs, and with a chassis that is 1” thick.

User Reviews

While scanning through some user reviews online, I noticed that many who bought this laptop were actually surprised with what it could handle, and some even commented that they could run large Adobe software for editing, keep a browser open, and listen to music, all with zero issues.

Their experiences certainly lined up with mine.

Buying Advice

The F555LA-AB31 comes with a strong 1 year international warranty, and even includes 1 year of accidental damage protection if you get it on Amazon. You can add a 3 year protection plan on top of that for a decent price as well. The F555LA-AB31 will come shipped to your door, ready to go out of the box, and with a decent startup time to put in your personal info and such.

Overall, the F555LA-AB31 is a strong buy coming in on the lower end of an under $500 laptop. You get a decent amount of performance that makes the laptop suitable for all of your normal daily tasks, with a bit of extra kick to handle streaming movies and television, a wide range of games, and lots of tabs on a browser, which is underrated.

This is a popular laptop for a reason. If you need a daily computer that can take on all of your mid-range tasks, and still want to save enough money for some accessories, the ASUS F55LA-AB31 is your best bet.
